If You Plan to Go Scuba Diving

Scuba Diving and Air Travel

Scuba diving and introductory dives are popular activities at many travel destinations. Many travellers choose to obtain a diving qualification or try scuba diving for the first time while on holiday, often through short intensive courses. Whatever your level of experience, it is important to dive safely and to use a reputable diving operator.

To reduce the risk of accidents, you should be healthy, well rested and physically fit before diving. A cold, fever, ear or sinus problems, and certain medicines can increase the risks associated with diving.

If you have heart or lung disease, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes or another chronic medical condition, you should seek medical advice before diving. A diving medical assessment may be appropriate before travelling.

It is also important to allow sufficient time between your last dive and flying in order to reduce the risk of decompression sickness.

  • At least 12–18 hours after a single recreational dive.
  • Up to 24 hours after repeated or more advanced dives.

Always follow the recommendations of your diving organisation and instructor.
